The Fast-Approaching Future

In January 2019 we set up a new category on our Phile-web site titled “Business.” This section will carry on the contents of the monthly Senka 21 magazine, which was suspended in December 2018, and supply articles relating to the audio business. So at last the magazine, which began as Audio Senka in 1972, the twenty-fourth anniversary of our company’s founding, has gone online.

Audio Senka was based on the principles of “contributing to the constructive development of the industry” and “fostering valuable new products.” Since it became an unprecedented presence as the industrial journal of the audio business, it played a top-batter role in the industry’s rapid growth. In accordance with the mission of nurturing specialized audio stores, Audio Senka received tremendous support from such domestic makers as Pioneer, Matsushita Electric, Sony, Trio, Japan Victor, Columbia, and Sansui Electric, as well as from importing trading companies.

I was 28 at that time, having joined Ongen Publishing at the age of 23. I worked as the chief editor of Audio Senka, which, unusually for an industrial journal, was thick with more than 300 pages. Since entering the company, I had been surveying the strength of the audio market retail stores in major cities around the country in a project called “Marketing Map.” Through that project, I became conscious of marketing, and Audio Senka was the practical outcome.

At the same time as the inaugural issue in 1972, I launched a marketing-related series by writing an article on the audio market and audio retail stores in Koriyama City in Fukushima Prefecture. For about 10 years after that, I ran the series on marketing and specialty audio stores in major cities in Japan, producing my own original method of measuring the size of the audio market and its potential in each city and region. And as well as that column, I also visited specialized retail stores around the country and introduced them with the aim of realizing the development and cultivation of stores.

Visiting every corner of the land, I talked with audio store presidents and shop managers and offered as much advice as I could. When makers visited Ongen Publishing to show me their new products, I was able to introduce retail stores in key points around the country, such as Hokkaido, Tohoku, and Kyushu. “Go there and tell them that Wada introduced them to you,” I would say. It was always successful.

While working as the chief editor of the growing Audio Senka, I also served as the main editor of our new publications, the quarterly Audio Accessory and AV Review. I believe that our publications did succeed in contributing to the industry. In the production of these magazines, I thoroughly adhered to a user-oriented policy. I repeatedly visited retail stores and the head offices of makers, as well as their branches and sales offices, to develop close communication with them, and as a result our magazines fared well.

In 1995, however, Windows 95 appeared, and the Internet subsequently spread like wildfire. Drawing up various simulations, I came to the conclusion that my prediction of the downfall of printed media was correct. Therefore, we established the Phile-web portal site in 1999 and commercially launched it in June 2000. The principles and ideas cultivated and polished in Audio Senka formed the core of Phile-web, which steadily began to grow.

A lot of publishing companies have been slow to jump on the Internet bandwagon and in some cases are even facing a crisis of survival. Indeed, it is no exaggeration to say that the situation is now reaching a climax. Many websites served as online supplements to the company’s printed media, but Phile-web had the completely opposite idea of actually gathering people online. Aware of the wave of Internet digitization, in 2000 we began preparations to operate a site that would be acceptable worldwide. We have unfalteringly followed this course right up to the present.

To put it simply, Audio Senka ((later Senka 21) was the parent that spawned the child, Phile-web, which now has more than 2 million unique users a month. As the child of Audio Senka, Phile-web is now up and steadily walking, with a huge number of music, audio, and visual followers.

From paper to the Web. I want us to grasp this current and to continue as a strong presence promoting the development of the industry. Now we have the online version of Senka 21. While on the one hand it is certainly a matter of joy, on the other, it is a fact that I cannot hide a touch of sadness within me. But we cannot afford to wait. The future is fast approaching. I want us to boldly change course and contribute to the industry’s further development.
